The largest natural freshwater reservoir in the Balkans with an area of 475 sq. km. The average depth is 5 meters, at the deepest point – 8 meters. Researchers believe the lake originated about 65 million years ago. It is fed by several full-flowing rivers. Active rivers allow the lake to be refreshed at least twice a year, leaving the water always fresh.
Skadar Lake is a park of national importance, the only one on the territory of Montenegro, where the aquatic ecosystem prevails.
At 13 km is the village of Rijeka Crnojevic.
Skadar Lake is rich in fish and waterfowl. Dace, carp, podusta, freshwater eels, noble salmon, roach, alose, pachyderm, mullet, and redfish are common. Birds are represented by no less than 26 species, especially the little and big cormorants. In winter, the lake is home to over 200,000 birds.
Skadar National Park is located in southern Montenegro. Most of the reservoir belongs to Montenegro, a third is in Albania. The lake is named after the town of Skadar, which is located in the southeastern part.
To the west and southwest, the park is protected by the Dinaric highlands. In the north and east, the coasts are more gentle and mostly covered with marshes.
The climate in the lake area is Mediterranean, with mild and rainy winters.
The average temperature in January is 7.3 °C. Summers are dry and hot, with air temperatures above 40°C and water above 27°C. Average annual temperature – 14.9 °C
